Reflections on Ps 56 (Br Joseph Zhang)

God Is My Refuge and My Protector

When I was young, my family used to raise some chicken. Sometimes the hen would hatch some chicks. It was interesting to observe the hen and the young chicks. The young chicks would usually follow the mother hen wherever she went. Whenever some danger approached, the mother hen would extend her wings and the young chicks would quickly hide under them. At the same time, the feathers of the mother hen would stand and she would make some noise as if she was prepared to fight off the approaching danger.

Facing his enemies, the psalmist of psalm 56 turned to God for refuge and protection. He prays, “Have mercy on me, God, have mercy, for in you my soul has taken refuge. In the shadow of your wings I take refuge till the storms of destruction pass by.” (Ps 56)

When we face difficulties and dangers, do we have the instinct of the young chicks to find protection under the mother hen’s wings? Are we like the psalmist turning to God and depending on God? Do we realize that the picture of the mother hen and the young chicks reflect much of Jesus’ love for us? It was Jesus who stood up and fought against the devil for us to the point of his death. However, he overcame death and triumphed in the end. Let us thank Jesus for his sacrificial love for us. Let us pray for the grace to remember to turn to God our protector for refuge when we are facing difficulties.
